Canelo Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin Odds and Predictions

Canelo Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin Odds and Predictions

Watch one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year as we see lineal middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin, middleweight world champion, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Golovkin demanded a rematch after the first fight didn’t go his way; the judges scored the bout 118-110 to Alvarez, 115-113 to Golovkin and 114-114 resulting in a draw.

If you’d have put your money on that result, you’d have been quids in: bookmakers were offering odds of 30-1 on such an outcome and not many would have predicted it.

With both fighters believing they won the fight, the rematch was always a foregone conclusion. Many fans and former boxing champions believed Golovkin was robbed of victory and they couldn’t believe the 118-110 scorecard in Canelo’s favour. As each will want to prove he is the better fighter, it makes a very interesting fight and a potential a fight-of-the-year contender.

Head to Head

Both men battled to a draw in September 2017 when they thought for the IBF, WBA, WBC titles; they will now get the chance to do it all over again. Since the draw, Golovkin has defeated Vanes Martirosyan whilst Alvarez hasn’t stepped back into the ring.

Golovkin remains undefeated and his record stands at an impressive 38 wins and one draw. He has beaten a whole list of impressive fighters including Daniel Jacobs, Kell Brook, David Lemieux, Martin Murray, Daniel Geale, Curtis Stevens and many more. He will look to continue that undefeated record going into the rematch.

The fight will be the first event to be shown on BT Sport’s new pay-per-view channel, BT Sport Box Office.

Alvarez has one defeat on his record. However, that was against one of the best defensive fighters ever to have graced the sport in Floyd Mayweather; Canelo lost the fight by a majority decision. Alvarez boasts a record of 49 wins, one defeat and two draws. He has shared the ring with some top names such as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara and more. However, they have all come up short against the stubborn Mexican.

Golovkin stands taller at 5’10 to Canelo’s 5’8. Having said this, surprisingly it is Alvarez who has the slightly longer reach at 70 ½ inches compared to Golovkin at 70”. Both men have outstanding power and this is shown in their knockout percentage. Th real power seems to lie with Golovkin; he has 34 stoppages from his 39 fights – a KO percentage of 87%.  Alvarez has the same amount of stoppages but has had more fights. In his 52 fights he has stopped 34 opponents resulting in a 65 KO percentage.

Alvarez v Golovkin Prediction

Although the first fight was scored a draw you would have to back Golovkin going into the fight. However, anything can happen in Las Vegas as the first fight proved. Both fighters have vast experience and will need to use all of that and what they learned from the first fight if they are to prevail the winner.

Don’t let Canelo’s KO percentage fool you; he is a big puncher and if he lands sweet on the chin of ‘GGG’ it could be all over. On the other hand, Golovkin’s defence is excellent and the fight may well reach the final bell. Both boxers will not want to leave their destiny in the hands of the judges this time around, a KO is a possibility and you will find good odds for this outcome.

My prediction is for Gennady Golovkin to win on points. He looked excellent in the first fight and if he produces a similar performance he should win, but that leaves his fate in the hands of the judges, who could score it another draw or in favour of Alvarez.
