George Groves v Callum Smith Odds and Predictions

The super-middleweight World Boxing Super Series comes to a conclusion on the 28th September when we see British fighters George Groves v Callum Smith square off in the squared circle. The fight takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the King Abdullah Sports City.

The fight will be shown on ITV Box Office and it will be available on Sky, Virgin, Tivo, V6 or by registering with ITV Player to watch live or on demand.

The winner of the Jeddah final will receive the World Boxing Association Super World Super-Middleweight title, World Boxing Council Diamond Super-Middleweight title, as well as the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

World Boxing Super Series Quarter-finals

The quarter-finals matched Groves against England’s undefeated Jamie Cox and it didn’t take Groves long to progress to the semi-finals as he scored a fourth round knockout. Groves defended his WBA title in style; it signalled his intent and sent a warning to his fellow competitors.

Chris Eubank Jr. also impressed in his quarter-final. He fought Turkey’s Avni Yıldırım and he finished his opponent in just three rounds. By doing so he set up a mouth-watering semi-final tie against fellow Brit Groves and defended his International Boxing Organization World Super-Middleweight Championship in the process.

It went to the scorecards when Callum Smith faced off against Sweden’s Erik Skoglund for the vacant World Boxing Council Diamond Super-Middleweight Championship. Skoglund was down in the 11th round but he made it to the final bell. Smith prevailed the winner as the judges scored the fight 116-112, 117-110 and 117-111.

Germany’s Juergen Braehmer took on American Robert Brant for the chance to reach the semi-finals. Braehmer outboxed and outworked Brant over the twelve rounds and won by unanimous decision – The judges scored the fight 116-112, 119-109 and 118-110. Victory meant we would see Braehmer vs Smith in the semi-final; however illness meant Braehmer had to withdraw and Dutch boxer Nieky Holzken stepped in as his replacement.

World Boxing Super Series Semi-finals

George Groves vs Chris Eubank Jr;  On paper this was a tough fight for both boxers, it split opinion from pundits and fans were divided on who would win the fight. Groves turned up with a game plan to frustrate Eubank and limit the amount of punches taken. He nullified Eubank’s tactics while getting his own punches off; Eubank didn’t seem to have an answer and the fight was fairly comfortable for ‘Saint George’.  The scorecards should have been a little wider, but the right fighter won – the judges scored the fight 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 in Groves’s favour.

Callum Smith vs Nieky Holzken: Nieky Holzken was an underwhelming replacement for a tournament of this calibre. Smith would have liked to face faced Braehmer, but as a professional he got on with the job and produced a dominant performance to become finalist of the prestigious tournament.  Smith won  by unanimous decision and it was wide with the scores reading 117-111, 118-110 and 117-111.

World Boxing Super Series Final

The George Groves v Callum Smith final was scheduled to take place in London on July 14, but organisers surprised the boxing world by announcing the fight will take place in Saudi Arabia on September 28.

Groves had the slightly tougher path to the final beating Eubank Jr and Cox on route. Smith defeated Skoglund and replacement Holzken for the chance to lift the Ali trophy and be crowned the super-middleweight World Boxing Super Series champion.

Head to Head

Groves record stands at an impressive 28 wins from 31 fights. He has three losses on his record which came at the hands of Carl Froch twice and Badou Jack. Defeats are sometimes frowned upon, but these defeats gave Groves valuable experience. He has mixed with some of the top names which has seen him grow  as a fighter. Groves has defeated Chris Eubank Jr, Martin Murray, Glen Johnson, James DeGale, Fedor Chudinov and came close to stopping Carl Froch – he will be favourite going into the final.

Undefeated underdog Callum Smith will go into the final full of confidence. His record currently stands at 24 fights, 24 wins with 17 coming by stoppage. Challengers such as Nieky Holzken, Erik Skoglund, Luke Blackledge, Rocky Fielding and Christopher Rebrasse have all failed to take that 0.

Smith is the younger man at 28; Groves is 30 years of age. Smith stands taller at 6’3 compared to Groves who is 5’11. Stats show power seems to lie with Smith; he has 17 stoppages from 24 fights – a KO percentage of 71. Groves has more stoppages but has also had more fights, meaning a lower percentage of 65.  According to BoxRec Groves is the best super-middleweight in the world, with Smith taking fourth place.
