Italy v Portugal Betting Tips & Predictions

The UEFA Nations League may not have attracted the interest organisers had hoped for so far; however, we have some exciting matches planned this weekend; one of the most anticipated being Italy v Portugal. No less than seven head to heads are scheduled to kick-off on Saturday afternoon.

With no Premier League ties to speak of, it’ll be a case of grin and bear it for the majority of football fans with nothing better marked out on the schedule. There is one match that promises a little more for the purists, however, as Italy host Portugal in Group A3.

Starting 7.45pm at the Guiseppe Meazza, armchair fans can follow the game live on Sky Sports. It promises to be a tie well worth following as two of European football’s big guns take aim. One sure-fire way to add to your enjoyment of the contest is with a bet and bookmakers have laid out the red carpet.

There’s a flood of markets, including: match winner; first goal scorer; total goals; both teams to score; half-time/full-time; total corners and much more. What’s more, when the game is underway, there will be the usual in-play markets, gifting you a financial interest at any stage.

Italy Would Go Top with Home Win

Italy start this match in second, four points on the board and an equal spread of form to date, reading draw-lose-win. That’s far from the start they would’ve hoped for; however, they are within two points of leaders Portugal. They know a victory in front of their own fans would lift them into pole, while giving them the advantage heading towards the finish line.

Azzurri stumbled to an opening day 1-1 with Poland at home in what must go down as two points dropped, despite the level of opposition. Not only did Italy fail to win that match, they came close to losing it when falling behind to a Zielinski goal in the first-half. That stunned the locals; however, they were able to force themselves level when Jorginho netted from the penalty spot with 78 on the clock.

Italy had, by far, the greater possession – 62% to the 38% of their opponents. However, they couldn’t make it count, registering just two shots on target. A night best forgotten for all in the home dressing room. Unfortunately, it was to get worse next time out when slumping to a 1-0 away to Portugal, a side more than happy to pile on the pressure.

Bookies Stuck on the Fence

Valente Silva was the star of the show back in September when grabbing what proved to be the match-winning goal for his nation. He rifled it home early in the second half when it seemed the opposing side had fell out of the tunnel. A lapse in concentration, but there was to be no equaliser, despite the visitor’s best efforts. Another disappointing showing by Roberto Mancini’s side and the critics are beginning to pay attention.

They finally got off the mark last time when beating Poland away from home, and what an important result that was. 1-0 the final score, it was a fair reflection of just how tight the game had been prior to the goal Biraghi netted deep into stoppage-time. For long periods of the match it looked like another draw was on the cards. In reality, to be fair, Poland had every right to feel hard done by not to get something out of the contest.

Will they double up and finally fire their campaign to life? Bookies think so and have moved to price Italy as favourites for the win. However, there’s nothing convincing about it with the match betting market wide-open at the time of checking. William Hill offer a market best price 13/10 and that quote proves the money men are at a loss to predict the outcome. That indecision, and generous offer, is sure to be well received by lovers of the value, happy to take a chance on Italy at such odds.

Portugal Unbeaten in Four

Portugal sit in the driving seat with six points on the board after two games. Not only do they enjoy a two-point advantage over their hosts, they also have the cushion of a game in hand. That means if they were to nick a win in Italy, they’d be all but weighed in as champions of the pool. It would come as no surprise to followers of this competition either, given just how impressive they have been in their opening pair.

Selecao are unbeaten in their last four outings in all competitions and have won each of their last three. That purple patch started with a friendly draw at home to Croatia in September before going on to rhyme off a quick-fire treble. They beat Italy 1-0 at Estadio da Luz in the match already mentioned; then they followed up by seeing off Poland by the odd-goal in five on the road, Valente Silva again on the scoresheet. This was followed by battering Scotland at Hampden.

The Tartan Army expected nothing from their side when matched with one of the best teams on the continent and they got exactly what they had planned for. Fernando Santos sent out a weakened side, but one more than good enough to get the result. Costa opened the scoring in Glasgow just before the break, Eder and Bruma adding second half goals to settle-up. By the time Naismith hit a reply the tie was dead and buried.

Hat-Trick Looks Tempting

2/1 with 888sport and that wouldn’t be the worst result for the tourists.

Followers of the stats will be interested to know Portugal have won each of their last two meetings with Italy by a 1-0 scoreline… in 2015 and earlier this year. Another 1-0 is Bet365 site. We’re happy to have no both score as a valuable part of our multiples.
