Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham
The first of our Mar 5-6 Champions League betting tips is for Borussia Dortmund v Spurs. It’s the second leg ties from the Round of 16 and Borussia Dortmund enjoy home advantage over English Premier League opponents Tottenham on Tuesday in one of four fixtures you can follow live on BT Sport over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday. Dortmund are up against it having suffered a 3-0 defeat at Wembley in the first-leg and that suggests the damage has already been done with the Germans staring at elimination from UEFA’s elite football competition. That won’t be the feeling in the home dressing room, however, as they look to apply pressure and see how Spurs react. An early goal for the hosts would make this one all the more interesting.
Dortmund are top of the Bundesliga with a record showing 16 wins and six draws against two defeats, but they did suffer one of those losses last time out when going down to a spirited FC Augsburg side on the road, beaten by the odd goal in three. Alcacer scored for the beaten team but that wasn’t enough to match their opponents who upset the odds thanks to a deadly double from Ji, one either side of the interval. Borussia have drawn three, won one and lost one of their last five but they remain top on goal difference, level on 54 points with Bayern Munich who we fancy to kick-on and win the title. The home cheer is even money favourite at Bet365 but be careful who you trust as many firms go 19/20 on the same outcome. The draw trades at a top price 29/10 with Unibet.
One Foot in the Next Round
Spurs put one foot in the next round when raging to a 3-0 home win at Wembley Stadium last time and that advantage is expected to be more than enough to see off the Germans. The visitors have been far from convincing in the league of late but were on fire that night and got off to the perfect start when Heung-Min broke the deadlock early in the second half. With the game edging towards a nervy 1-1, Vertonghen scored a second on 83 minutes before Llorente put the icing on the cake with a third less than three minutes later. Two late goals turned a nervy second-leg into a match Tottenham just have to see out. They can lose on the road, as long as they remain within the three-goal margin.
Spurs warmed up for this match with a weekend draw in the Premier League, taking their recent tally to two defeats and a share from three. Their title hopes are now in tatters and the Londoners have been sucked into a battle with Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea for a place in the top-four. Missing out on Champions League football next term by finishing fifth or sixth would have a huge impact on the club’s finances and that’s something they will be eager to avoid. Tottenham don’t need to win this match and that explains why they can be backed at 14/5, top price with Bet365. We’ll take the draw in our betting tips at the same price with the same firm.
Real Madrid v Ajax
This tie remains in the balance as Real Madrid set-up at home against the might of Dutch giants Ajax. The home side have dominated this competition in recent years and will have a strong say in who lifts the title this term. They also start this match with an advantage, having taken a 2-1 win in Holland last time, a result achieved thanks to goals from Benzema and Asensio, enough to see off an Ajax side who kept things interesting through a Ziyech strike. There was very little between the sides that night and that will give Ajax confidence, but Blancos took the chances that came their way and are hot favourites to finish the job.
The Spaniard’s domestic form hasn’t been anywhere near as good of late and they were hammered 3-0 by Barcelona in the Copa De Rey at the end of February before dropping a 1-0 result to the same opponent last time. Rakitic scored the only goal of the latter on Saturday when smashing the ball into the net with 26 minutes on the clock. That helped the victors ease 10 points clear at the top of La Liga and they are now merely counting down the days before landing another La Liga title. While Real Madrid have dominated Europe, Barca have been making hay in La Liga. Madrid are 8/13 with Coral to give their fans a win to celebrate and we reckon that’s worth a spot in your accumulators.
Pushing for the Title
Ajax may be on the brink of elimination from the Champions League as their wait for glory in the competition continues but they are in the mix to win another Dutch top-flight title, if they can see off main rivals PSV Eindhoven who are five points better off at last count. Ajax have work to do if they are to finish in pole but boosted their chances by claiming maximum points in each of their last two, taking advantage of PSV’s three draws on the bounce.
They hammered Ado Den Hag 5-1 on the road at the tail-end of last month and that result would’ve boosted team-morale. Van de Beek hit the first that day on 39 minutes and that advantage was added to by Tadic, Dolberg and a Ziyech double. They face a much sterner test here but will need to be just as ruthless in front of goal when visiting Madrid. Bookies don’t give Ajax any hope of collecting the away win and those going against the grain in search of a bigger price can get their hands on 17/4 with Bet365. The same firm have the draw at 10/3 and, given how tight the first game was, we wouldn’t be in a rush to put anyone off that if it was their idea of a bet worth having. Both teams to score again makes sense at 4/9 (Bet365).
PSG v Man Utd
Moving on to Wednesday and this is game of the night as Ole’s Man Utd look to win in France to give themselves a chance of getting through to the next round. The Red Devils needed a big performance in Manchester to have any hope of seeing off a star-studded PSG side, but it was the Parisians who shone that night, blasting their way to a 2-0 win on 12 February. Pogba was sent off for a second bookable offence to wrap up a frustrating night for the Premier League side who fell to goals from Kimpembe and Mbappe. Job done? You’d think so and punters can get their hands on a strong 1/2 at Bet365 for PSG to finish the job with a home win.
A Hard Fight
Man Utd are seriously up against it here and although the players will travel to France determined to make their hosts earn a place in the next round, the weight of expectation is very much against them. The visitors were involved in a battle with Southampton at the weekend when beating The Saints 3-2 at Old Trafford thanks to a late goal from Lukaku. Traders at Bet365 have the away win as big as 11/2 and that may just catch the eye of value hunters. Man Utd don’t need to qualify for that bet to be paid out, just win the game. Bet365 are top price on the draw at 19/5 and that’s bigger than we expected to see. Sit on the fence and take the level finish.
Porto v Roma
The last of our Mar 5-6 Champions League betting tips is Porto v Roma. Porto find themselves behind in the tie having lost 2-1 in the reverse, but they did claim a vital away goal and that will boost their chances of sneaking through. There’s plenty of life left in this one and that should make it all the more enjoyable to watch. They also lost when last on league duty and that defeat left them two points behind Benfica in second. The home win is betting favourite and Bet365 offer a market best price of 21/20. That’s a bet we think is worth having and the locals are best taken as a single at a decent quote. Those stuck on the fence can back the draw at 27/10 with the same firm.
Back to Winning Ways
Roma won three Serie A games on the bounce recently but were beaten 3-0 by Lazio in their opening game of the month on Saturday. Kolarov was sent off near the end but the damage had already been done at that point, thanks to goals for Caicedo, Immobile and Cataldi. Roma had more possession and a greater number of shots at goal but couldn’t make them pay, putting just three of 15 on target. They’ll have to be better in the final third on Wednesday but those who expect them to be can back the away win at 14/5, top price with Unibet.
