LIgue 1 Conforama is the top French footballing league. It is administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel and like most others, is contested by 20 clubs. The Ligue 1 season opens in August and comes to a close in May. Ligue 1 came about in September 1932 – originally called National, before being changed to Division 1. In 2002 it switched to its current name.
AS Saint Etienne has been the most successful club in the league’s history, having won 10 league titles. However, it is Olympique de Marseille who holds the record for playing in the top flight for the highest number of seasons, although PSG hold the record for longevity with 45 seasons at the top without a break. PSG are also the current champions and look set to retain the titles this year.
