England Dominant in 1st Test Match Win
England fans have had plenty to cheer since setting down in Sri Lanka. The weather made headlines during the early exchanges and the board came in for much criticism for organising a trip to Sri Lanka during rainy season, players and fans suffering long delays of anything up to six hours, but when the skies settled, and play broke out, we enjoyed seeing England somewhere near their best.
The first ODI match was rained off, before England fired back to win the second, third and fourth with plenty to spare. Sri Lanka stopped the rot with a crushing 219-run response, but it did little to dampen spirits amongst the tourists.
Next came a Twenty20 victory that helped England keep warm for the upcoming Test series and they picked up where they had left off, exploding out of the traps to win by 211 runs, claiming victory inside four days of a scheduled five. The score was impressive, and you’d be hard-pushed to find a player that didn’t get, at least, pass marks over the course.
Root Compliments Team as Losing Run Ends
That result ended a miserable 13-match winless run on the road and there was a feeling in the camp that it would also bring about the dawn of a new era, one that brought success for English cricket and all that followed.
That was Joe Root’s first away win as captain of his country and it would be an understatement to say he enjoyed it. The popular leader beamed when speaking to the press at the conclusion of play, labelling it one of his best wins ever.
He, as a good captain should, took time to concentrate on the value of team effort, adding that it was pleasing to see the team, both experienced and inexperienced players, controlling from the off. Root picked out his spinners for particular praise and they were certainly deserving of it, taking a combined 16 wickets, one of the best hauls in decades.
Confidence was sky-high in the camp heading into the 2nd Test Match and it showed as they again played some wonderful cricket to put their hosts to the wall early, running out 57-run victors. That sealed their first series win in Sri Lanka for 17 years.
There’s No Touching England
Despite early signs of a fightback from Sri Lanka, the second test match went the way of much of the campaign before it; the hosts played some good cricket and gave themselves a chance, before being blown away by an opponent oozing class and confidence as they play top quality cricket.
It’s fair to say not many teams in the world can match England when they are in the mood and enjoying the game. The beaten side were forced to throw up their hands and admit they were downed by a better team at every turn.
There’s no shame in it but there won’t be a rush of punters going out to back Sri Lanka to bounce back and nick a Test Match win against the run of play as they did in the ODI. Bookmakers have long since realised the same and price another away win as favourite.
Those looking to back England for another victory can get 10/11 at Coral and that makes much more sense that risking your cash on the underdogs at 5/2, or 11/4 the draw. It is worth mentioning, however, if England take their foot off the gas thinking the job is done, their opponents are good enough to make them pay.
A Timely Boost For Team & Captain
Joe Root has been behind everything good about England in Sri Lanka and he seems to be growing into the job with the passing of each match. Fans will be delighted for him too after suffering a difficult campaign away from home before touching down in Sri Lanka.
This series has come at exactly the right time for Root and the win has done wonders for English cricket, both at the ground and amongst those loyal to the cause watching back home. Fans have had it difficult with the early starts but those sticking with the team have had plenty to shout about.
Back England to win the 3rd Test Match and have another flutter on Joe Root, who scored a century on Friday in a stunner, to be England’s top first innings run scorer at 11/4 (Coral). Series correct score betting has England 3-0 at 6/4 – top price through Bet365 – or those after a bigger bet can get their hands on 2-1 at 11/4 with the same firm. A shorter price, of course, but we’ve seen enough to suggest the clean-sweep is on.
