Volkan Oezdemkir vs Anthony Smith Betting Tips & Predictions
UFC Fight Night 138:
Our first lot of MMA betting tips starts with Volkan Oezdemkir vs Anthony Smith. The action starts when Volkan Oezdemkir faces Anthony Smith in the latest instalment of UFC Fight Night with the Avenir Centre in Moncton, Canada playing host. This one has fans excited and it’s little wonder with two of the division’s most ambitious fighters going head-to-head.
Followers can watch the action live on BT Sport from 2.00am Sunday 28th October. The bookmakers have put together an intriguing book,; they offer enough value to ensure punters are able to bet on the outcome and add a bit more spice to the occasion.
As well as the main event, you can also wager on the undercard bouts. These include Artem Lobov v Zubaira Tukhugov at featherweight; Misha Cirkunov v Patrick Cummins at light heavyweight and Andre Soukhamthath v Jonathan Martizen in the bantamweight division.
Pick the winner of each fight and throw them together to build a nice priced accumulator. Or, you could play the specials markets in the hope of landing a bigger price. Each leg offers betting on a number of outcomes, including total rounds and method victory.
The latter is a touch more difficult as you have to correctly predict the winner of the bout and how they will triumph, i.e. on points or by submission. However, the prizes are well worth the winning.
Smith’s Rise Has Been Impressive
If you are a lover of MMA, you can’t help but be impressed by the rise to fame of Anthony Smith as he has blazed a trail of glory towards major titles. The American born mixed martial artist fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska, brings an impressive 43-fight record, with his stats standing at 30 wins against 13 defeats.
When noticing the progressive 30-year-old has 17 wins by knockout, 10 by submission and only two on points, it comes as no surprise to learn Smith has been dubbed ‘Lionheart’. Followers of his career to date will testify it’s a fitting handle for this all-or-nothing scrapper.
The towering 6ft 4inch light heavyweight’s form has seen him rise to number 10 in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings but many expect him to improve on that and victory over Volkan Oezdemkir would see the warrior achieve just that.
2018 has been an eventful year to date for Smith who started the calendar with a technical knockout defeat at the hands of Thiago Santos in UFC 125 back in February. The outcome wasn’t what he had hoped, but it was a thrilling fight and fully deserving of the bonus picked up by both gladiators for playing their part in bout of the night.
Lionheart Grabs Chance with Both Hands
There was more joy to be had for Lionheart fans in his next outing, recording a fantastic first round knockout win over Rashad Evans in the summer on UFC 225. It was a fight most expected him to take but few predicted the manner in which he would prevail.
Not expected to return until later than year, Smith’s team received a late notice call-up to fight Mauricio Rua on July 22nd UFC 225. As you might expect, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Stepping in as a late substitute is never easy for either fighter but the underdog used it to his advantage, clinching a first round KO. Stunning, and the UFC again dug deep to pay out a fighter of the night bonus. An example to young competitors on the importance of always keeping fit, sharp and willing to go in at the deep end.
Can he do it again? Bookmakers don’t think so and are confident enough the American will leave empty-handed traders they have priced him up as a convincing second favourite. The odds makers at Bet365 seem particularly keen to oppose Smith and the 7/5 quoted on him winning is one of the better prices you’ll find if seeking a bet on the upset.
Most of the competition are stuck around the 13/10 mark on the same outcome and that will catch the attention of value hunters who know backing enough 13/10 shots at 7/5 will lead to profit over the course of a season.
Swiss Star Priced Favourite
All the money since this fight was signed and announced has come for Volkan Oezdemkir; that fact may catch a few UFC followers off-guard, given just how strong bookies have come down in support of the Swiss star. However, a quick flick through his records tells us it’s perhaps not the biggest surprise of the season so far. Volkan is a gifted fighter and one driving towards dominance.
The 29-year-old was born in Fribourg and has been true to his roots, continuing to fight out of the Swiss canton capital. Tagged ‘No Time’, he certainly strikes us as a man in a rush to get on with his career; he’ll enter the octagon on fight night with a mixed martial arts record reading 15 wins and two defeats from 17 goes. As well as that, Oezdemkir is also 5-0-0 as a kickboxer; you can see evidence of his background in the way he fights MMA.
Of his 15 wins in the books, he has claimed no less than 11 by knockout and we’re sure to see signs of that raw power again in Moncton. He has been far less active than his opponent in 2018 so far, starting the year with defeat vs Daniel Cormier in January on UFC 220. With the light heavyweight title on the line, Volkan was victim of a second round TKO defeat.
Since then, he has endured a stop-star season. Firstly he was scheduled to fight Mauricio Rua in May on UFC 129. However but couldn’t get a visa to compete due to past problems outside of competition. He was then penciled in to battle Alexander Gustafsson in August on UFC 227, but again that failed to materialise.
Bookies All Over Volkan Victory
Oezdemkir had to be removed from the card after suffering a broken nose during his fight preparations. This means there’s now an alarming gap on his CV. Will that hold him back? Certainly not, if choosing to place your trust in the hands of bookmakers who are all over a Volkan victory.
The Swiss national is as close to a sure thing as you would hope to find when checking the odds, with no more than Bet365’s 10/17 available. That’s sure to put a few off, refusing to make do with cramped odds in a contest that appears to be evenly matched with both men having a real chance of victory.
So, what’s the best way to play this one? Well, it’s quite simple if approaching it from a betting perspective. Is Volkan Oezdemkir a great fighter who deserves to be here? Of course. Should he be priced like losing is out of the question? We really don’t think so.
Now we move on to the underdog, Anthony Smith. Has he been impressive of late? You bet. Does he have the tools to score another shock victory? We certainly wouldn’t put anyone off. That leaves us with our bet. We say back Smith for interest stakes, sit back and enjoy the show. Just know, whatever happens, you have the value working in your corner.
