Wimbledon 2019 Betting Tips, Predictions and Odds

The third Grand Slam of the season is on the horizon as the UK grass-court swing takes full hold of the calendar and the world’s best seek glory at SW19. Here are our top Wimbledon betting tips, predictions and odds.

Tournament History

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and has a rich prestige and history associated with it. The tournament is 142 years old and is arguably the biggest prize in tennis. The event has always been staged at the All England Club, Wimbledon and is the only Grand Slam event of the season played on grass courts. The prize money at Wimbledon stands at £34 million and is the only event to implement a strict dress code of all-white across all of the events played within the fortnight.

Format

Wimbledon adopts the same format as the French Open, the Australian Open and the US Open. Once the qualifying rounds are completed, 128 players make up both the male and female main draws – with matches taking place over a 2 week period.

Venue

Wimbledon has always been staged at the All England Club and developments at the venue have been made on a regular basis in an attempt to bring it into the 21st Century. The 2019 edition of the tournament will see the introduction of a roof on Number 1 Court to go with the roof on Centre Court – to ensure the notoriously inclement doesn’t hamper the schedule too much. In addition, Wimbledon is the only one of the four Grand Slams to have a rest day – on the middle Sunday – a tradition that continues to be held up unless the weather deems otherwise.

Dates

Monday 1st July – Sunday 14th July 2019.

Previous Winners (Men’s)

Roger Federer’s dominance at Wimbledon has been one of the hallmarks of the past 20 years in men’s tennis with the Swiss Legend having won the tournament on 8 occasions. He overtook Pete Sampras who managed to win 7 titles in the 1990s whilst Swede Bjorn Borg won 5 consecutive titles between 1976 and 1980.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has picked up four Wimbledon titles whilst legends of the game Boris Becker and John McEnroe have both claimed three Wimbledon’s each.

Previous Winners (Women’s)

The roll call of female Wimbledon winners is arguably the greatest in the game with Martina Navratilova topping the list with 9 Wimbledon triumphs. Serena Williams and Steffi Graf have both claimed the famous trophy on 7 occasions each whilst tennis pioneer Billie Jean King picked up 6 titles in a career that transcended both the amateur and open eras. Venus Williams will be looking to build on her 5 championship wins once again this year whilst defending champion Angelique Kerber will be looking to add another Grand Slam to the cabinet.

2019 Tournament Preview

Men’s:

Novak Djokovic is the world number 1 and defending champion at Wimbledon and he will be chasing a 5th win at SW19 as the favourite. Roger Federer returns to his spiritual home, on his favoured surface and he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with here.

Rafael Nadal will arrive in London fresh from his 12th French Open title and the Mallorcan has won twice at Wimbledon, despite regularly speaking of his difficulty at playing on grass.

Dominic Thiem has enjoyed an impressive season on the ATP Tour and he will be keen to make an impact on the biggest stage as will youngsters Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Big servers have enjoyed plenty of success at Wimbledon in recent years so the likes of Kevin Anderson, Marin Cilic and Nick Kyrgios could all be men to look out for here.

Women’s:

The French Open provided another new Grand Slam winner with Ashleigh Barty claiming her first major win and subsequently climbing to the top of the world rankings.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is sure to be a serious force to be reckoned with here as will a returning Serena Williams who always enjoys playing on grass.

Angelique Kerber has struggled since lifting the trophy at SW19 last year whilst the usual suspects in Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens and two-time champion Petra Kvitova will certainly be fancying their chances in a very open looking draw.

Men’s Outright Winner Odds:-

The attention of the sporting world will turn to SW19 in what is always one of the most iconic sporting events of the season. Novak Djokovic will arrive in West London as the defending champion and heavy favourite but with the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the draw; it should be a fascinating tournament.

Here are some of our favourites for the Wimbledon title:-

Novak Djokovic– 13/8 (Bet365) –

Four-time champion Novak Djokovic has enjoyed a great season so far – winning the Australian Open as well as the Madrid Masters. He came up short in his semi-final against Dominic Thiem at the French Open but he will be ready to bounce back here and is prolific on grass.

Roger Federer – 7/2 (888sport) –

Roger Federer arrives at Wimbledon as one of the hot favourites for the title once again. His record of 20 Grand Slams looks a long way from being surpassed and with the Swiss’ win in Halle last week; he looks in great form on the grass once again this season.

Rafael Nadal – 9/1 (Bwin) –

There are a few question marks surrounding the fitness of the Mallorcan following his 12th French Open title win but should he arrive in South-West London, his army of followers will be backing him all the way. He last won the event in 2010 and doesn’t’ play much grass-court tennis but he is a true competitor and always takes some beating.

Stefanos Tsitsipas – 20/1 (William Hill) –

Enigmatic Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas has been in fine form throughout 2019 and has climbed inside the world’s top 6 players as a result. He is a relatively unknown quantity on the grass but looked in good nick at Queens Club last week and could be one to watch here.

Alexander Zverev – 28/1 (Betfred) –

The career trajectory many expected from Alexander Zverev hasn’t materialised in 2019 and the German has been struggling for form all season. He showed real heart at the French Open to reach the last 8 before running into Novak Djokovic but he is still looking for a breakthrough event on the ATP Tour.

Dominic Thiem – 40/1 (Betsafe) –

Consecutive French Open final defeats don’t look to have knocked the confidence of Dominic Thiem who has also picked up some impressive wins on hard courts this season. The grass doesn’t seem a natural fit for him but he is a man in form and he could take some stopping on his day.

Nick Kyrgios – 40/1 (Betsson) –

The unpredictable Australian is always a threat on grass courts due to his fiery game play and incredible reactions. It very much depends on which type of Kyrgios turns up but he certainly has the potential to cause some damage in the draw and could be dangerous if he gets on a roll.

Kevin Anderson – 66/1 (Bet-at-Home) –

Last year’s runner up Kevin Anderson has endured a rotten run of injuries since his run to the final in 2018. He returned at Queen’s Club last week with limited success but his big-serving prowess is certain to hold him in good stead here at Wimbledon and he could be a wild card to look out for in the draw.

Top Pick – Novak Djokovic – 13/8 (Bet365)

Outside Pick – Nick Kyrgios – 40/1 (Betsson)

Women’s Outright Winner Odds:-

The continual unpredictability of the WTA Tour makes is one of the most exciting sporting events in the world and every player in the Women’s Wimbledon draw will fancy her chances here.

Here are some of our favourites for the Wimbledon title:-

Ashleigh Barty – 4/1 (Ladbrokes) –

The newly crowned World Number 1 and French Open is riding the crest of a wave currently at the top of the women’s game. She isn’t known for possessing a huge amount of grass-court prowess but has an incredibly rounded game and her win at Edgbaston last week suggests she is more than ready to compete at Wimbledon this year.

Serena Williams – 13/2 (Guts) –

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will be desperate to go one better this year following her final defeat in 2018. She has endured a tough season with injuries but she continues to fight back and she will relish a return to SW19 and the fast courts.

Naomi Osaka – 12/1 (Betfred) –

The defending US and Australian Open Champion Naomi Osaka has endured a tough couple of months but is continuing to blaze a trail at the top of the game. Her grass-court prowess is relatively unknown but she has the game to hurt anyone if she can bring her best tennis to the table.

Petra Kvitova – 12/1 (Betsson) –

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will be looking to clinch another Wimbledon title at SW19. She has been solid this season, most notably reaching the Australian Open final and her only question marks centre round her consistency over a two-week event.

Angelique Kerber – 14/1 (888sport) –

Defending champion Angelique Kerber has failed to kick on following her win last year and she will have precious ranking points to defend. She notoriously enjoys grass more than any other surface and she may have been saving her best tennis for this week.

Karolina Pliskova – 16/1 (William Hill) –

Karolina Pliskova has become a beacon of consistency on the WTA Tour in recent seasons, epitomised by her win at the Rome Masters last month. She hasn’t produced the best results on grass historically and will be looking to bounce back from a tight defeat to her sister at Edgbaston last week.

Simona Halep– 20/1 (888sport) –

Former world number one Simona Halep has long been viewed by many as having the talent to dominate the women’s game without perhaps possessing the necessary mental toughness. She has one Grand Slam under her belt (French Open 2018) and she will be desperate to pick up a second title here.

Sloane Stephens – 25/1 (Bet-at-Home) –

Often overlooked as a front runner in big events, Sloane Stephens will be a force to be reckoned with on the grass at SW19. She has the mentality to step up her performances on the biggest stages and she will enjoy the quick courts and partisan crowds at the All England Club.

Top Pick – Naomi Osaka – 12/1 (Betfred)

Outside Pick – Sloane Stephens – 25/1 (Bet-at-Home)
