York Races: Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival
The Yorkshire Ebor Festival races are held annually at York Racetrack – one of the top tracks in Europe; very recently it won the award for Flat Racecourse of the Year and was also voted top in the Times newspaper survey of Britain’s favourite racecourses.
The history of York goes all the way back to Roman and Viking times and the horse races started during the time of the Roman Emperor, Severus; it has been ongoing for over 2,000 years. On official records, it shows that York first fully supported racing back in 1530. However, the very first detailed records of a horse race were dated as late as 1709. Because of regular flooding in this area it was moved to Knavesmire, where it has stayed to this date.
Overseeing everything, there is the York Race Committee, which still manages the racing at York. It was formed in 1842 in order to improve the quality of racing. By 1846, the committee introduced the Grimcrack Stakes, which is now one of York’s most enduring races. The racing at York has become increasingly popular over the years – and around 18 race days are staged there annually. The most popular of all these York race events is the incredible Yorkshire Ebor Festival.
York Races 2018
Now that the British Horseracing Authority has published its 2018 fixtures, York Races has confirmed its own 18-day schedule. The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival is the most highly anticipated event and is seen as the sporting and social highlight of the year. There will be three Group One contests that are the feature races of the weekdays; then the Ebor Handicap will be the centerpiece of all races on Saturday 25th August.
There are currently amazing offers to be had if you fancy getting your hands on some of the winnings.
