Formula One Betting – The Basics

There are several different factors that you need to analyse when you learn how to make a bet on F1. Obviously, the most important things would be the ability of the driver alongside the performance of the car. However, as is the case with other sports betting, luck also plays a role in the outcome. Therefore, in order to gain any edge over the house, you need to check out the historical performances of both the team and the individual. You then also need to factor in the effect of luck and any other outside influences which may affect the result.

Pole Position

The driver’s position on the grid has a varying amount of importance all depending on the track.  For example, if you qualify for pole position at Monza, you have an 83.8% chance of winning the race. However, in contrast, if you get pole at Montreal, you only have a 33% chance of taking the win. This goes to show that it is important not just to look at the grid position of the driver, but the historical data of the course.

There are certain circuits where it is very difficult to overtake, such as Monaco, so punters need to consider the driver’s ability to get a high place on the grid – because starting in Pole is a huge advantage here.  On the other hand, there are circuits, such as Montreal, where it’s much easier to overtake. This gives bettors more of a chance to find value in a bet when not putting money on pole.

If you understand the value of pole position and grid position, then you can have much more chance of success. If you select your winner before understanding the historical data of the course, then you could make a mistake.

Considering the Tyres

If you learn about the different tyre characteristics and performances, then you’ll have a distinct advantage when making your bets. There are certain areas you must consider:

  • How the different characteristics of the courses affect tyres.
  • Working out the team’s tyre strategy for race weekend.
  • The racing style of the driver.

A manufacturer has returned to the sports and created excitement and uncertainty. Pirelli has created somewhat unpredictable tyres, which have created many more overtaking opportunities. This has made knowledge of tyre characteristics much more important.

Check Out the Forecast

A very important factor of Formula One betting is checking out the weather. You then adjust your betting accordingly. The weather can affect the results more than most other sports.

If the weather is due to be fine with a hot track, then the weather will make little difference. However, when the weather worsens, that’s when issues arise. Rain can cause havoc with the outcomes. When you check out the weather, you should also research the following:

  • The individual driver’s performance in bad weather. Ewer drivers may have trouble.
  • The historical weather data of the course.
  • The current forecast.

Different Characteristics of the Circuits

An important factor of betting on Formula One is being able to understand the circuit characteristics and matching them with the car and driver’s capability.

Every racing circuit is different and each of them presents new challenges and different issues.

If you look at the Bahrain circuit, it has many interesting characteristics that create challenges for teams. More so than many others.

Firstly, the circuit consists of four long straights, every one of them finishes in a high braking zone. This offers clear opportunities to overtake.

As well as this, there are several tricky medium-speed corners that need a decent car balance. As such, this is a track that suits a set-up compromising straight-line speed and cornering grip.

In the course of the race, drivers will be at full-throttle for only 50% of each lap. This means that the demands put on the car’s engine are much less extensive than many of the other Grand Prix courses. Whilst the throttle may not be an issue, the higher temperatures alongside low humidity could cause problems for engines. Also, the circuit’s slow and fast nature puts more pressure on the brakes – so proper management of brake-ware is important.

As soon as you know and understand track characteristics, then punters should also look up practice times and qualifying times. They need to check out which of the drivers and teams have their car trialled.

It’s all in the Strategies

Looking at team strategies is very important when betting on F1. Therefore, punters should therefore be aware of the main influencers on the track.

Each team looks to get an edge over the competition through the tactics they use for tyres, car set-ups and even the tactics for pit-stops. They also need to put team orders into place.

If you want to stop team order from affecting your betting, then you need to pay attention to the current standing for both of the drivers – alongside the constructors’ championships.

Just before the start of the season, you need to understand who the number one drivers are in each team. This will help you to avoid picking number two drivers, as the team-mate will always get preferential treatment.

Changes of Rules and Regulations

One very important factor to remember is that you need to keep up-to-date and understand all the current rules. The FIA constantly amends the regulations to keep it fresh and exciting. However, these changes can hurt or help different teams, so keeping an eye out for them is uber important.

The Most Popular Formula One Bets

Once you’ve done all of your research, you need to figure out what type of bet this information is the most useful for. If t it helps you pick out the winner, great, but they might lead you to other bets and not necessarily help with the overall winner.

The good thing about F1 betting is that there are several different options in betting. This means that nearly any prediction you can make will be something you can use to earn some money from – so what types of bets are there?

Winner Bets

Obviously, the winner bet is the most obvious; this is simply betting on a driver to win the race. It’s really simple – just pick who you believe will win and if he comes in first, you’ll be quids in.

Because of the nature of the race – all the variables and drivers, the odds for this type of bet are normally good. Even when betting for favourites, the odds are generally better than evens, so your return will normally be more than you bet. Some drivers will pay out huge amounts – especially drivers considered to have little chance of winning. In some F1 seasons, there have been 1 or 2 drivers that have dominated the top spot – this means that although there are lower payouts for those drivers, the odds on others are much higher.

A Podium Finish

This bet is a little easier to get money from than the ‘winner’ bet. To be successful in a Podium Bet, just pick a driver you think will have a good race… and if they get a spot on the podium, you win… first second or third, it doesn’t matter. Whatever position they finish in on the podium, your payout will be the same.

Obviously, because the chance of winning is higher, the payouts will be a little less. However, on most drivers, the odds should still be better than evens. This is an ideal bet if you believe a driver will have a great race, but you’re not sure he will win. If there’s a driver that will give him a good run for his money, this is the bet to go for.

A Driver Matchup Bet

These are some of the most flexible – and most fun bets in F1. These are bets that you are more likely to get online than in a land-based bookie. These bets allow you to pick between two drivers who you believe will finish in a higher position in the next race. If the driver you choose finishes faster than the other, you win.

With this bet, nothing else in the race matters. It doesn’t matter if yours finishes second from last – as long as the other driver finishes last. This is good if you have an idea about a driver, but you don’t think he actually stands much chance of winning.

So, if you think a driver will do better than normal… better than bookies give him credit for – but you still don’t think he can get a win or even a podium finish, this is a great option. This means you can benefit from the knowledge of a driver’s good form, even if you don’t believe he can win.

A Prop Bet

Not only can this bet be very profitable, but it can also be very entertaining. Prop Bets – or Proposition Bets are bets where an event is suggested to either happen or not. There are times when you can predict it with knowledge and skill, but other times it’s simply a guess – a lucky punt.

If you are betting for entertainment’s sake, you can go for any prop bet and sit back and enjoy. However, if you’re betting for profit, be careful to choose one that requires skill and knowledge to predict.

Unfortunately, as most online bookies don’t separate prop bets into skilled and unskilled categories, we have to figure out which is which. Here are examples of each:

Skilled Prop Bet

Maybe something like whether a certain driver will lead the most laps in a race. Obviously, this bet requires skill and knowledge. Understanding the sport and drivers will be better than simply blindly picking a winner.

Unskilled Prop Bet

This could be something like the number of cautions in a race – will there be fewer or more than four cautions? You might be able to try and predict how crazy the driving might be, but a proper prediction would be difficult – and it’s more likely to be just a guess. Ultimately – a bet like this will be a 50/50 guess. As much fun as these bets are, there not really for serious punters.

Taking Pole Position

This is where you bet on which driver you think will start in pole position on the grid. This is another very simple bet. Simply pick a driver and bet on whether he’ll take pole position. If your driver qualifies the quickest, you win.

Like the ‘winner’ bet, the odds vary very much on the likelihood of your driver. If you pick a driver that has won a lot throughout the season, you won’t get as high odds as if you go for a driver that hasn’t had the best season. This is the bet to make if you believe that the driver has a very fast car, but may struggle with traffic or weather conditions. It’s also a nice warm-up bet for the big race.

The Future Bets

Another popular F1 bet is a futures bet. These are bets on what team and/or what driver will be champion by the end of the season. SO you can make a bet on which team you believe will win the Constructor’s Championship and what driver you believe will win the Driver’s Championship. The best time to make one of these future bets is before the season begins. Some bookies close down these bets at the start of the first race.

However, some will allow you to continue making the bets throughout the season. These bookies simply adjust the odds based on the changing likelihood of the driver or team winning. So the more a driver or team wins, the lower your return will be. However, if a driver starts the season badly, you could get even better odds than before the season started.

So, you know what to check out for and what bets you can make – you’re ready to start your F1 betting. Check out our top betting tips and odds today.
