Can City Score Big in the Community Shield?

It’s the battle of the big boys – Chelsea v Manchester City. As we all know, the new season in English football starts traditionally with the Community Shield match at Wembley. This is the first time since 2012 that Manchester City and Chelsea have played for the first trophy of the season.

My Prediction For This Game:

Manchester City is clearly currently the best team in England. Pep Guardiola’s side won the Premier League last season 19 points clear of second-placed rivals, Manchester United; this season we could well see a similar scenario. Guardiola likes to collect silverware and this is an ideal chance for his side to start the season by showing its class against the London club. We predict that City will score at least two goals against Chelsea, and Betsson offers great odds on this at 1.91.

Chelsea:

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri,  took over the club from his fellow countryman Antonio Conte this summer but is already facing big problems. Not only did he not have enough time to implement his 4-3-3 tactics, but also the team’s star wingers Eden Hazard and Willian are on the verge of leaving the club, closely followed by goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. There are many unknowns around the club’s status and it wouldn’t be surprising if they fail to perform against City.  For now, the only noteworthy addition is midfielder Jorginho, but he has no star power like the above-mentioned players. He will not have the ability to influence the team in the same way. Also, Chelsea has previously lost four other Community Shield matches, including a loss 3-2 to loss to City in 2012.

Manchester City:

The defending league champions managed to strengthen the squad even more by the addition of Riyad Mahrez and have managed to keep hold of all its important players. Pep Guardiola even has two or even extra quality players in every position, so whichever team he decides to send onto the pitch at Wembley, they should be considered the strong favourites. However, City has played its pre-season friendly matches mostly with its younger players, so that could be a problem for them in the first match of the new season.

Reasons For and Against The Tip:

✓ Manchester City is favourite in this game; they play attacking football and will be looking to score as many goals as they can.

✓ Chelsea’s star players Hazard, Willian and Courtois are doubtful for this game because they are looking to leave the club.

✓ Chelsea has a new manager, Sarri, who has not had a lot of time to implement his 4-3-3 tactics yet.

✘ Chelsea has players that can defend well, so it’s possible we could see 0-0 or 1-0 result at the end.

Tip: Manchester City over 1.5 goals
