Cricket: ODI – England V Sri Lanka Tips and Odds

The ODIs are about to start – so out come our best England v Sri Lanka tips, predictions and odds for you. After a superb 5 test series which saw England beat India 4-1, England now travel to Sri Lanka for 5 One Day Internationals followed by a 3 test series. Despite the relatively long break for England’s one day side, they will feel confident going into this series as the world’s top-ranked one day side. Eoin Morgan’s team last played one day cricket when they ruthlessly beat Australia 5-0 with strong all-round performances with both bat and ball.

This time, England will play in considerably different conditions, with wickets which are less batting friendly. Moreover, the conditions will also favour spin bowling, so the five-game series will present a good challenge for England’s spinners. Especially thriving will be Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid who had good series against Australia. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has not won a one-day series at home since 2015 when they beat West Indies. They lost their most recent one-day series to South Africa 3-2. That being said, Sri Lanka will feel confident playing at home, so who would you back?

England

England- Batting

England’s batsmen shone in the series against Australia, especially Jonny Bairstow who has scored 4 centuries in international one day cricket this year. Jason Roy will be guaranteed to play some shots at the top of the order. Also, Joe Root came into some form at the end of the most recent test series and will be able to score freely without the pressures of the captaincy. Jos Buttler had a great summer in all formats and will want to continue that with some big hitting down the order. With Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali all capable of putting together scores, it is sometimes difficult to pick at the beginning of a series who will make the big runs.

Joe Root is odds on favourite to be England’s top batsman at odds of 11/4 with Coral. Meanwhile, Roy is at 3/1, Morgan is at 6/1, Stokes at 6/1 and Buttler at 7/1 all with Coral. However, we predict that it will be Jonny Bairstow who will be England’s top batsman in the first game, with Coral offering 3/1. With Bairstow and Roy likely to open the batting together we also predict that they will score the highest opening partnership, currently at odds of 7/10 with Coral. In terms of Man of the Match, it is the England batsman of Roy, Root and Bairstow who are odds on favourites with Ladbrokes and we predict that with his additional bowling potential it will be Root, currently at odds of 7/1.

England- Bowling

England’s bowlers also had a good summer, with spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali being their star players during the Australia series. Chris Woakes, who has recently climbed the ODI bowling rankings, will be back after an international rest. Ben Stokes, who is always hungry for wickets, will play. There could also be an international debate for Olly Stone.

However, as Sri Lankan pitches are likely to favour the deceptive spin of Adil Rashid, we predict that he will be top bowler for England in this game. He is currently at odds of 3/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral. We also suggest that Moeen Ali would be a contender for this, at odds of 9/2 with Ladbrokes and Coral.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka- Batting

The batting line up in Sri Lanka’s will see some new faces; experienced former captain, Angelo Mathews, was recently sacked and will not play in this series. Therefore, Sri Lanka will rely on the experienced Dinesh Chandimal. He will be confident going into this game due to a rapid 77 he scored in the warm-up game. Openers, Dickwella and Tharanga, are likely to play though, as well as all-rounders Dananjaya and de Silva. We predict Dinesh Chandimal will be Sri Lanka’s top batsman, currently at odds of 4/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral.

Sri Lanka- Bowling

In terms of Sri Lanka’s bowling, the experienced Lasith Malinga is playing again and bowling with form, taking 4 wickets in the most recent game against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. Thisara Perera also shone in that series with a five-wicket haul against Afghanistan and Akila Dananjaya also looked to be on form. But it is Malinga we suggest will be top-rated bowling for Sri Lanka at odds of 10/3.

Result

We ultimately predict that England will win the first game and they are odds on favourite at 4/9 while Sri Lanka is at 7/4, while similar odds are available at 888sport.com with England at 12/25 and Sri Lanka at 33/20. We also predict that due to England’s hard-hitting openers, England will get the highest score in the first 15 overs, which is currently available at 8/15 on Ladbrokes and Coral. Either way, this is sure to be an exciting opening game of a 5 match series.
