Mar 16 League One Betting Tips & Predictions

Bradford v Luton

The first of our top Mar 16 League One betting tips is for Bradford v Luton. It has been a season to forget for Bradford fans and off-field problems have pulled them from a promotion contender to a side now certain to be relegated. They’ve lost their manager and given fans very little to shout about, winning only 10 of their previous 36 matches, losing no less than 20 times already. They did pick-up a rare three points last time out but that does little to paper over the cracks and we can’t back them to double up against the league leaders, even at 7/2 (Bet365).

A Title Shot

Luton is moving swiftly towards the title and start with season stats of 22-10-4, meaning they have 76 points on the board and are seven better than Sunderland in third. Automatic promotion looks to be on the cards but if they want to go to the Championship as winners of this division they must hold-off a late fightback from Barnsley who is three points off the pace. The Hatters have drawn two of their last three and another share is 14/5 – top price with Unibet – but we’ll take our chances on the away win at 4/5 with Coral.

Our Tip: Luton to win – 4/5 at Coral

Barnsley v Sunderland

This is the standout fixture of the weekend in League One and will be one of the most fiercely fought matches in English football on Saturday. We’re surprised it won’t be shown live on TV anywhere, but those who get themselves along to the venue are in for a real treat. Barnsley starts second in the pile and takes confidence from winning each of their last two. Completing the hat-trick would see them pile pressure on leaders Luton while taking a massive leap towards gaining automatic promotion to the second-tier of English football. Bookies have them picked and the locals are favourites across the board, no better than 21/20 with Bet365.

An Unbeaten Run

If Sunderland fails to land automatic promotion they will look back on this season as one of the failed opportunities, but there’s no doubt they are moving in the right direction and if they can take something from this match they will remain in the hunt for a top-two berth. The Black Cats are on an unbeaten run, winning three and drawing two of their last five. They ended level in their most recent start and we believe they’d see the value in coming out of this one with another share of the spoils. Those who agree can have the draw at 13/5 with Unibet, an away win tempting at 3/1 (Bet365). Jump up on the fence and take the level finish to keep things interesting.

Our Tip: The draw – 13/5 at Unibet

Walsall v Portsmouth

Pompey appears to have thrown away their chances of winning the league and will now fight for a place back in the Championship, either through a top-two finish or by coming out of the play-offs unscathed. To give themselves any chance of automatic promotion they must see the sides above them stumble while taking advantage against Walsall. The locals won’t settle for being mere opponents, however, and take heart from the fact they are unbeaten in three, that run showing two wins and a draw. They won last weekend and have been priced at 14/5 (Ladbrokes) to do the same again. A draw will net you 13/5, top price when betting at Bet365.

Lack of Killer Instinct

Portsmouth has eight points to find to catch Barnsley, which means time is against them and any slip between now and the final game of the regular season will be punished to the max. Pompey has managed just one win in their last five, that run made up of three draws and a defeat. They are another side who only have themselves to blame if they don’t go up and appear to have lost the killer instinct that had them set the pace late last year. We’re going to go with another draw at 13/5 but those with a bit more faith can play the Portsmouth away day at 21/20 with Coral. That price has them as a convincing favourite, but their form suggests they don’t deserve to be.

Our Tip: A draw – 13/5 at Bet365

Charlton v Burton

Charlton looks to have gained their place in the play-offs and will be eager to continue to pick-up points until they are guaranteed an extended season with the highest possible finish. The Londoners are on an unbeaten run, winning two and drawing three of their last five and they picked up three points in their most recent outing. Home advantage should see them go close to adding another maximum and you’ll see the locals appear in many lower league accumulators. Backers will get 11/10 at Bet365 and that looks fair.

Destiny of the Mid-table

Burton seems destined for a midtable finish and it’s already clear they won’t be living up to the pre-season hype and applying any kind of pressure to the major places. They have suffered an indifferent season and their stats going into this one show 12 wins, 11 draws and 13 defeats, although they did claim a victory last time. A side who are difficult to beat but this will mean more to the hosts and, for that reason, we can’t back the away day at 14/5 (Bet365).

Our Tip: Charlton to win – 11/10 at Bet365

Blackpool v Doncaster

The last of our Mar 16 League One betting tips is for Blackpool v Doncaster. This is an interesting one as Blackpool could leapfrog Doncaster into the promotion play-off places with a home win and that won’t be wasted on the locals who will see this as their final roll of the dice. The Seasiders are involved in a five-way fight to land sixth in the table and push them into an extended season, but they’ve found wins hard to come by of late. Let’s give Blackpool the benefit of the doubt and support them at 15/8 (Bet365).

Some Bad Performances

Doncaster looked well on their way to a top-six spot, but they have performed poorly in recent weeks and that has left the back door open for those around them to close the gap. No win in five has piled pressure on Rovers and there will be questions asked if they throw this one away. We don’t think they should be favourites and won’t be backing them at 8/5 (Bet365).
