The iconic streets of Baku are up next for the drivers as they navigate around the city’s ancient walls and the longest street circuit on the F1 calendar. The castle that adorns the circuit is a section unlike any other, with the narrowest part of the track standing at just 7.6 meters wide, the equivalent of two Formula One cars side-by-side.
After bringing upgrades to their home race, victory at Monza will have Ferrari keen to secure another race win. However, McLaren will be keen to rectify their errors after a discussion regarding the ‘Papaya rules’ enforced last time out that ultimately saw them suffer some damage to their fight for both the driver’s championship and constructors championship by finishing P2 and P3.
Mercedes continues to look strong, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell fighting with the leaders at the front. Car 44 finished above both Red Bulls in 5th, with Russell splitting Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finishing a respectable 7th.
It was Ferrari dreamland last time out at Monza as Charles Leclerc crossed the line to finish P1 in the teams home race for the first time since he last did it back in 2019. In front of a packed-out Tifosi crowd, it is safe to say that everyone liked that.
It was a McLaren front-row lockout as Lando Norris looked to earn himself another race win with teammate Oscar Piastri by his side. However, it was Piastri who forced himself into the lead of the race on lap one and went on to stay out in front for most of the race.
While most of the grid opted for a two-stop strategy, the Ferraris of Leclerc and birthday boy Carlos Sainz found themselves running at the front. Opting for a risky one-stop strategy, Sainz’s ageing tyres could not hold on, resulting in the two McLaren’s overtaking. However, Leclerc held out to secure an emotional victory.
If you had asked the Monegasque driver at the start of the season if he could win any two races, he would have said the two he has won: his home race in Monaco and the team’s home race at Monza.
First introduced to the Formula 1 race calendar in 2017, the Baku street circuit has been the home of many upsets, including in its first time hosting.
It is a stunning track where, just like its street circuit counterparts such as Monaco, any mistakes are punished quickly and severely by the medieval city’s walls. Cars race down the city’s narrow and winding Icheri Sheher old town roads, where the action is to be had at every corner, while the loonnnnng main straight provides plenty of slipstreams and overtakes.
Previous winners of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix include Daniel Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton, and Sergio Perez.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix Winners:
2017 – Daniel Ricciardo
2018 – Lewis Hamilton
2019 – Valtteri Bottas
2021 – Sergio Perez
2022 – Max Verstappen
2023 – Sergio Perez
After losing his lead once again on lap 1 of the Italian Grand Prix, we are backing Lando Norris to come back fighting and take the victory, with his teammate close behind securing a podium finish.
