The European Tour returns with the German Darts Championship this Friday, 30th August 2024, where some of the biggest names in the game take to the stage at Halle 39 in Hildesheim.
This year’s roster includes last year’s winner, Ricardo Pietreczko and the three top seeds for this year’s edition of the competition: Dave Chisnall, Gary Anderson, and Gerwyn Price.
It is number nine out of 13 on the European Tour as darts returns to Hildesheim, Germany, for another year. Running over three days, many of the world’s best will battle it out to secure a spot in Sunday’s final.
Of the 48 players, 32 are in action on Friday in round one. The 16 match winners will then go on to round two, where the 16 seeded players will be ready and waiting. This year, Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall is the number one seed after his win at the previous event in Leverkusen back in June. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Gary Anderson is seeded number two, with ‘The Iceman’ Germwyn Price at three. Reigning champion Pietreczko is seeded 12th, with Luke Littler 14th, followed by Michael Smith (15) and Michael van Gerwen (16), respectively.
There is no Luke Humphries in this year’s event due to being away on a well-deserved family holiday. However, it is still packed with top players, making for some mouthwatering ties. Some big names in round one this year are Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade, Nathan Aspinall, Peter Wright and Dimitri van den Bergh.
Rewind back a year, and it was an unexpected German, otherwise known on the stage as ‘Pikachu’ who secured the win in the final against not just anyone but Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright. This was after getting past Stephen Bunting at the quarter-final stage and beating the mighty Van Gerwen, securing his shot at the trophy. The final finished 8-4 in favour of Pietreckzo, with the then 28-year-old receiving a standing ovation from a home crowd.
This European Tour Championship has been on the circuit since 2012, marking its 12th year in 2024. In fact, ‘Chizzy’ was a finalist in the first-ever running of the event. The legendary Phil Taylor lifted the trophy that year. Nine different winners have been involved, with only one player winning it more than once—‘The Green Machine’ Michael Van Gerwen.
Our team of experts at Betting Online is backing another Chizzy win after his victory last time out on the tour. Our team also believes his good friend Chris Dobey is in with a chance, making for a friendly but feisty final.
