2024 Shanghai Masters Preview

2023 Shanghai Masters Recap

The 2023 Shanghai Masters event debuted a brand new format: a 12-day main draw tournament. It saw huge success and is expected to be the format of the tournament going forward.

The tournament saw some of the biggest names in the game become casualties right from the opening round. Both Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray made early exits in Round 1.

The quarter-final stage saw several other high-profile exits, including Jannik Sinner, Casper Ruud, and Carlos Alcaraz. 

In the final, it was Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz who battled it out to become the 2023 Shanghai Open champion. Eventually, it was Hurkacz of Poland who came out on top, winning the match 3-6 6-3 6-7.

Shanghai Masters History

The Rolex Shanghai Masters is one of only nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in the world. The 1000 is the total number of points the tournament’s winner receives.

The ATP 1000 tournaments, Grand Slams, and Year-end Championships are considered the most sought-after titles on the tour. 

It has been praised as one of the best events on the tour, and to further represent its reputation, the Shanghai Master won the ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year award from its first year launching until 2013.

Novak Djokovic holds the most Shanghai Masters titles, with four since the tournament began in 2009. Andy Murray and Djokovic share the record for the most consecutive titles, with both achieving two victories in a row.
