Novak Djokovic continues his US Open title defence on Saturday in a third-round match against number 28 seed Alexei Popyrin.
This is the third match-up between the Australian and the Serbian, two of which came in 2024 in round two of the Australian Open and the third-round tie at Wimbledon.
Ahead of the match, our betting tipsters have been providing their top tips and predictions on who will progress to the fourth round.
The 25-year-old is in the best form of his career right now, so a match-up against last year’s champion and number two seed Djokovic could not come at a better time. The Australian cruised his way past Kwon Soon-woo and Pedro Martinez to make it to the third round of the Open. The Australian will be banking on his exceptional return game to pose a threat in the match, which has won him an impressive 53% of points. He also has a strong forehand with a win rate double that of Djokovic, currently standing at 10% and 5% respectively.
The 2023 US Open champion continues to ease his way past his opponents without expending any extra energy as he looks to retain his crown. The Serbian saw his second-round tie cut short after opponent Laslo Djere retired injured. So far this year, Djokovic has emerged victorious in 81% of his matches on the ATP Tour, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. The third-round matchup against Popyrin will see the 37-year-old look to extend his undefeated run against the Australian to four.
The pair have met three times previously, with the US Open third-round tie set to be meeting number four. The experienced Djokovic has won on each occasion, first back in 2019 out in Tokyo in Round 1. This was followed by two in the space of a year as they came head-to-head in this year’s Australian Open in the second round and Wimbledon in round three.
Despite Popyrin’s incredible run of form, our betting experts can not ignore the domination, stamina, and talent of tennis legend Novak Djokovic and believe he will edge the win.
