England starts their third and final test match of the series against Sri Lanka at the Oval on Friday. With the series win already wrapped up, they look to complete a clean sweep and continue their unbeaten summer of test match cricket.
Our expert tipsters have been making predictions and providing tips ahead of the final test. To find out what they think might happen and how the sides will fare, continue reading below.
Looking for the first 100% Test summer since 2004, Ollie Pope and his side are one win away from achieving it again 20 years later. Pope will hope he can be the difference this time at the crease after a disappointing performance with the bat at Old Trafford and Lord’s. The Oval is a happy hunting ground for him, having been where he scored 11 first-class centuries. Combined with Joe Root continuing to show his class and top performances from Gus Atkinson with both the bat and the ball, England will be heading into the first day with confidence. It will also be a debut for 20-year-old left-arm pace bowler Josh Hull who is in the team in place of Matthew Potts.
England team to face Sri Lanka in third Test:
Dan Lawrence, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone, Josh Hull, Shoaib Bashir.
One thing England should not do is count their opponents out, however. Even if the scores say so, Sri Lanka has not made it easy for the home side. The middle-order batters have been standing strong at the crease, and Asitha Fernando’s bowling performance has been outstanding, with 14 wickets in the two tests. A side looking for something to take home to show for their performances will be out to end England’s unbeaten run after showing huge amounts of resistance in the previous two sets.
An enthralling match that saw England set a score of a whopping 483 required the visitors Sri Lanka to achieve a record breaking run chase in order to win. Root forced his way to the top of the all-time run list with another century, scoring 143. He was joined by Atkinson who got his maiden test century (118) and who became just the third England player to score a century and take five wickets in a Test since 1984. Sri Lanka held their own, making it hard work for England with half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal and captain Dhananjaya de Silva. But ultimately, it was a huge total for the tourists and England went on to win comfortably on day four.
The experts here at Betting Online believe England will secure a clean sweep of the series at the Oval, especially after the performances in the second test and the pitch at the Oval. Below are the latest odds ahead of the match courtesy of William Hill.
